Atiu Guesthouse, Are Manuiri - the alternative accommodation
We will welcome you at Atiu airport with a fragrant flower garland. Alternative Accommodation, the company that runs the Atiu Guesthouse, has its own rental car and can arrange the hire of motor scooters. We do not live on the premises, but you can contact us from the free in-house phone at any time if you need our help.
Are Manuiri, which means guesthouse, has two twin bedrooms and one family bedroom with a queen-size and a single bed. All rooms have a fan. All windows are screened. Because it was formerly a family home, visitors will have to share the spacious bathroom, kitchen and lounge/dining area. The house has its own rain water supply and a solar heater. In our cozy lounge and dining area or on the thatched veranda you can spend rainy days with a good book from the guesthouse exchange library, listen to Radio Rarotonga or enjoy a home cooked meal in the company of your fellow visitors.
The nearest food store is located at a minute's walk from the house.
Alternative Accommodation, was founded in 1999 to give our visitors the opportunity to experience real island life right in the middle of one of Atiu's five villages. Being part of the village gives you a unique chance to gain an insight into the daily routine of a remote island community. Whether it is the participation in a game of tennis on the nearby hard-court, the joint Sunday worship in one of our island's churches, an invitation to join a wedding or other traditional event and especially to participate in the opulent feast that is part of almost every celebration, with a bit of luck and the right timing of your stay, you are likely to have a memorable experience due to the friendliness of Atiu's people.
Needless to say that being in the middle of village life also means that you will experience the lively sounds that come with it: The roosters' crowing, dogs' barking, children's joyful laughter and the neighbour's radio, the drumbeats of a dance performance training, the tapping of making tapa cloth, and the rhythmic beat of the big slit gong that calls worshippers to church on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at sunrise. It is all part of a unique way of life that can only be found in remote small communities.
You can make a reservation directly with us or through a travel agent. Please make sure that you have a confirmed booking with
